Poundbury is an experimental 'new village' built as an urban extension of Dorchester on Duchy of Cornwall land. Consisting of town houses, cottages, shops and light industry the village boasts an innovative design allowing the combination of Traditional Architecture and Modern Town Planning, led by the wishes of The Prince of Wales and The Duke of Cornwall. Instead of using a suburban style pattern, the village has been built on a high-density urban pattern, focussing on integrating housing, shops and workplaces, rather than splitting them into zones. The buildings all attempt to reflect traditional architectural values. Planners claim the design centres on the person rather than the car. Andrew Brownsword sponsored the one million pound development of the Market Hall, designed by John Simpson. The development is close to a much older one, Poundbury Hill Fort, which dates back to the Middle Bronze Age. A roughly rectangular work, the fort looks out over the Frome valley and the River Frome itself. Just outside the fort is a Romano-Celtic cemetery dating from about the fourth century AD. The hill fort's outer defences were damaged by the construction of a Roman aqueduct, which supplied fresh water to the town of Durnovaria (Dorchester), some three miles away.
