Milton Abbas is a village in Dorset in the south-west of England, approximately seven miles south-west of the market town of Blandford Forum and 11 miles north-east of Dorchester. The attractive village of Milton Abbas holds the distinction of being the first planned settlement in England. Milton Abbas features on many picture postcards of rural Dorset. It was founded in 1780 when Joseph Damer (Lord Milton, later Earl of Dorchester) decided that the old village of Middleton ruined the view from his new mansion at Milton Abbey. So he decided to move the entire village over a nearby hill! When the last residents refused to leave Middleton, Damer simply opened the sluice gates of the new dam! Every two years the village holds the Milton Abbas Street Fayre. The main street is closed and people flock to enjoy an event which is as near to an eighteenth century fair as can be. Traditionally, to create an authentic eighteenth century festive atmosphere, home made bunting is hung across and up and down the street from hooks which are already installed just under the thatch. Residents and stall holders are asked to dress in eighteenth century costume and visitors are welcome to join in.
