Iwerne Minster is a village situated in the North of Dorset. It is in the Blackmore Vale and under Cranborne Chase. The village lies on the A350 with Shaftesbury to the north and Blandford Forum to the south. It is a very small village with a population of around 900 (according the 2001 census), the major employer in the village is a cheese shop that employs about 57 people. The village takes its name from the River Iwerne which flows south and on into the Stour. Iwerne is an ancient Celtic name, probably meaning 'yew-tree stream', it was recorded as Iwern broc in the 10th century but is certainly much older than that. Iwerne Minster is mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086, recorded as Evneminstre. It is also recorded in a Saxon charter dated 871 as ywern or hywerna. When in Iwerne Minster you should consider The Talbot Inn for a drink, a meal or even somewhere comfortable to stay. The village has its own football field and it also has a cricket ground and pavilion which were provided from lottery funding. The village church, St Mary's, is one of the few in Dorset with a stone steeple.
