Ferndown is a town of roughly 20000 inhabitants, with the proud claim to be the largest inland town in its county of Dorset. It is both a dormitory town for nearby Bournemouth and Poole, and a local centre of business and industry with a major industrial estate on its doorstep. Around the town the countryside is largely heathland (including Holt Heath reserve), on which north and south of the settlement golf courses have been built, plus patches of old woodland and the occasional bog – the River Stour snakes around its southern side and the River Moors its east. Ferndown has developed excellent leisure and sporting facilities over recent years, and its common is noted for rare regional wildlife. What is now recognized as a town is actually comprised of several smaller settlements grouped together, these being Hampreston, Ferndown itself, Longham, Stapehill and Tricketts Cross, hence there are several small centres along with nowadays a superstore within the town. Bournemouth Airport is just four miles from Ferndown, and it is convenient for the many ferries departing from Poole. Equally it makes a good base for visiting the various seaside resorts just a short drive away and for the New Forest a few miles east via the A31.
