Evershot is a small picturesque village situated in west Dorset, midway between Beaminster and Cerne Abbas. It lies about six miles north of the county town of Dorchester. It encapsulates all the charm and beauty of a quintessential English village, with its narrow winding roads and delightful thatched cottages. Most of the buildings date from between the 17th and 19th centuries. Visitors can stay at the Summer Lodge country house hotel, a fine Georgian listed building. Adjoining the hotel is a 9000 acre deer park providing beautiful walks, with an abundance of wildlife and flowers on show throughout the year. Also worth a visit is The Acorn Inn, a 16th Century coaching inn that Thomas Hardy called 'The Sow & Acorn' in 'Tess of the d'Urbervilles'. Once known as The Kings Arms, it originally brewed its own ales using water drawn from the source of the River Frome. Saint Osmond's Church was restored in the 19th Century. The first church on this site was built in the 12th century, about the time of Richard Coeur de Lion. One of the earliest remnants from the first church is the Norman font. The pedestal, however, is 19th-century and in the shape of a cross.
