Charminster is a historical and beautiful Dorset village lying one mile north of the county town of Dorchester. The village is full of delightful traditional cottages and possesses a typical old English feel. The village of Charminster, situated on the River Cerne, should not be confused with the Bournemouth suburb of the same name. The river and the small village church of St Mary's give the village its original name Cerneminster, as recorded in 1223. A mosaic pavement has been unearthed in the village dating from Roman times. The arches of St Mary's church are Norman, dating from the 12th century, whilst the bell tower is 15th century. The river Cerne flows under the church. Charminster also features Wolfeton House, the home of the Trenchards from 1480 until the late 18th century. There are many ghostly tales associated with the house! For Pubs and Inns Charminster has The Three Compasses and the Inn for All Seasons providing that special village pub atmosphere. Charminster was the town of origin of Richard Norman, one of the planters of The Massachusetts Bay Colony, arriving in America in around 1626. Charminster was also the site of a large Victorian Lunatic Asylum, which could accommodate up to 720 inmates.
