Benfleet is in the borough of Castle Point in Essex which covers the areas of Canvey Island, Benfleet, Thundersley and Hadleigh. Parts of Benfleet are built on a range of low hills, topped by the ruins of Hadleigh Castle. Hadleigh Castle is an ancient monument, forming the most important historic site in the Borough and the most important late medieval castle in Essex. The ruins are set alongside Hadleigh Castle Country Park, which covers nearly 500 acres of countryside. Benfleet was used as a Viking base until they were defeated by the Saxons at the the Battle of Benfleet in 893AD. Subsequently a church was built by the Saxons in thanksgiving for the victory and now St Mary's church is the most recent church occupying this site. The public houses located in the Monument and St Mary's area of the town include The Anchor, "The Hoy and Helmet" and the Half Crown. There are also a range of restaurants in the South Benfleet conservation area and the Maharaja Indian Restaurant on the London Road is the largest Indian restaurant in Essex. Benfleet railway station is the closest station to Canvey Island, an island in the River Thames estuary off the coast of Essex.
