(full name and title: Frederick Sewards Trueman, OBE)
Born: February 6, 1931. Died: July 1, 2006
Fred Trueman is perhaps one of cricket's most famous names. He was born in Yorkshire, reputedly weighing in at a hefty 14lbs 1oz at birth. For many people he fits the bill as the archetypal Yorkshireman. However, if he had been born less than a quarter of a mile further south he would have been born in Nottinghamshire and thus not played for Yorkshire at all. Had this been the case things might have been very different as far as his success in the sport was concerned.
Trueman played for Sheffield United CC while still at the age of only 15. In one match he took six wickets for one run against a top side in the English League. This brought him to the attention of Yorkshire CCC and the door opened to a career at the top. In 1952 he made his test debut after being given leave from his National Service by the RAF. In his first game for England, playing against India, he made an immediate impact. After less than three overs of their second innings India were no runs for four wickets, three of these having been taken by 'Fiery Fred' as he was to become known.
In 1964 he became the first player to reach 300 test wickets in a match at The Oval against Australia. Despite such performances, Trueman was often overlooked for England, despite being at the top of his game. He was picked for only about two thirds of the Test matches that he could have played in. Trueman himself attributed this to his rather forthright and outspoken nature, feeling that the selection committee did not like his attitude which they misinterpreted as 'bolshy'.
Despite what the selection committee may have thought, Fred remains one of the best loved figures in the history of the game. Trueman is considered by many to be one of, if not the, greatest fast bowlers in the history of the game of cricket.
