On it`s journey westwards from the Cotswolds to the River Seven, the River Frome and it`s tributaries have cut a series of deep, narrow, wooded valleys, more Alpine in appearance than the rolling hills to the east. The village of Chalford lies mostly on the northern side of a valley known from the seventeenth century as the "Golden Valley", so named because of the glorious autumnal colours and hues of the wooded slopes (or because of the vast fortunes made by the mill owners!!). Chalford is an amalgam of five smaller villages - Chalford; Chalford Hill (Lynch); France Lynch;Bussage and Brownshill - these villages grew to house the weavers and other cloth workers, including Huguenot refugees, as a result of the expansion of the woollen and silk making industries. Chalford has many handsome Georgian clothers houses, nonconformist chapels and mills. The parish church of Christ Church was built in 1724 with a classical arcade on the northern side altered at different time during the 19th century and furnished by the Arts & Crafts Movement. Opposite the church is a Round House, one of a series of unique dwellings built by the Seven & Thames Canal Co. in the 1780`s to house the Lengthman who was responsible for this stretch of the canal. The decline in the wool trade during the 19th & 20th centuries lead to a falling population and cottages being left unrepaired. However, over the last 40 years the value of historical buildings and villages has been recognised and Chalford is now a thriving community with many of the former weavers cottages undergoing restoration.
