Located in the County of Hampshire the village of Stoney Cross has had a long association with the air force, at one time Lightnings, Sterlings and Dakotas were common sights but today little remains of the base that was situated here as it is now part of the New Forest parkland with the some of the old roads and tracks used to access campsites. The New Forest was established as a hunting and recreation ground for the aristocracy by William the Conqueror in around 1079 and this was with tragic consequences for it was here at Stoney Cross that his son, William Rufus, was struck by an arrow and killed, today the “Rufus Stone” marks the spot – although there are some that doubt that this was an accident as William Rufus (William II) was quite an unpopular king! Because of the unique location of Stoney Cross it was at the heart of the charcoal production business and the Purkis family remained the principal producers of charcoal in this area up to the 19th century, indeed it was a member of this family that transported the body of William II to Winchester, at that time the capital of England. Today there are still firms producing charcoal here in the New Forest and whilst their lives are still relatively harsh it is not as bad as it once was. Stoney Cross offers easy access to the New Forest set amid some of the most pleasurable scenery in the area.
