Farnborough takes its name from the Anglo-Saxon settlement of Fern Hill and is famous for its international air show and its pioneering in aviation. With easy access to London and Basingstoke via the M3 motorway and a 40 minute train ride from London‚s Waterloo, Farnborough International Air Show, held in July every two years, attracts quarter of a million visitors to 1500 exhibits. The business airport of Farnborough Aerodrome, home of the Royal Aircraft Establishment (RAE), saw the first powered flight in the UK. Nearby Farnborough College of Technology still has the wind tunnel used for development of the first jet engine and was where most of the research for concorde took place by RAE apprentices. This small Hampshire town, surrounded by Scots Pine woodland and heathland has two churches of note: St Michael‚s Abbey where Napoleon III is entombed, and St Peter‚s Church with it‚s 1300 AD wall paintings including the only painting of St Eugenia known to exist in England. The town centre mainly consists of boarded up shops, but there‚s a market in the nearby Asda car park on Tuesdays. Near the prominent landmark of the Clock House is the Tumbledown Dick, an old English rock pub, popular for its pool tables and live bands.
