The Dullest Day in History?

The 11th of April 1954 AD

Easter Sunday – which April 11 1954 happened to be – can even now be a tiresome day for those not of the Christian persuasion. But that particular Easter Sunday has been calculated by one search engine company as being the most boring in the 20th century. Highlight of the European scene was a general election in Belgium, which doesn’t register as significant for many other countries; further afield in India there was a non-event: a planned coup in French territory didn’t go ahead.
The calculation takes into account the births and deaths of famous people, 11/4/54 only enlivened by the births in New Zealand of actor Clive Revill (you’d know his face but maybe not recognize the name) and in Glasgow of Angus Lennie who (admittedly memorably) played the jockey who went stir crazy in The Great Escape, and later appeared as a regular in Crossroads. Case made really.
April 11 1954 has a rival in the insignificance stakes, another April day, the 18th of that month in 1930 when the BBC radio announced there was no news. It can sometimes feel like that now if you listen to Five Live too long.
