To the South Herefordshire, set on a high sandstone cliff overlooking a large loop in the River Wye is the historic market town of Ross-on-Wye. The view of Ross-on-Wye is dominated by the spire of St. Mary's Church, which is visible for many miles around. Built of red sandstone in the 13th century, St. Maryýs has some interesting features and is well worth a visit. On the west side of the churchyard is the 'Prospect' a pleasant view point and garden where you can look down on the River Wye curving beneath the town. The gardens were laid by 'The Man of Ross' locally know as John Kyrle, a generous benefactor of the town of Ross, who lived between 1637 and 1725. In the centre of Ross-on-Wye twice weekly markets are held under the sixteenth century Market House which houses the Heritage Centre. A short distance away set in the heart of the Wye Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is Symonds Yat, famous for its natural river scenery, spectacular views and beautiful woodland. Symonds Yat Rock is an impressive viewpoint. Here you are able to view the Peregrine Falcons that have been nesting close to Yat Rock since 1982.
