Tring is a small market town in the very west of Hertfordshire. Mostly residential but surrounded by countryside, it is within an hour by train from the centre of London. On the edge of the Chiltern Hills (an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty) and with the Grand Union Canal running near it too, the town has 3 reservoirs just north of it, built to provide water for the canal locks. These reservoirs are now a haven for wildlife and very popular with visitors. There is much to do here - The Tring Brewery Company is a successful traditional brewery with a shop open daily. Famously Lord Rothschild’s estate is here and he first introduced the Glis Glis to the area – a rodent, squirrel like creature. Upon his death in 1937, Lord Rothschild donated a fine collection of stuffed animals, birds, reptiles and insects to the town’s Natural History Museum. The sports centre has a large indoor pool, multipurpose sports hall and an all-weather pitch. The Court Theatre is a popular venue for both plays and concerts and the Charter Market is held weekly on a Saturday, with a Farmers’ Market an alternate Saturdays. This is an excellent base for exploring the London region, especially as there are numerous hotels, pubs, guesthouses and restaurants to choose from. Tring is very accessible too by road, rail and air, with the M25 nearby, the West Coast mainline running through and Luton airport.
