Frequent winner of “Hertfordshires Best Kept Village”, Much Hadham is the largest of several “Hadhams” in the close vicinity! The oldest buildings in this quaint little village 20 minutes from Stansted airport, in the valley of the River Ash, are from the 15th century but there are a variety of dwellings, many having their much loved & tended gardens open to the public. There’s a fete every August and the garden centre here, Hopleys, has a show garden too. The High Street is home to The Forge Museum and Victorian Cottage Garden, opposite the village hall – it has Grade II listed buildings, became a blacksmiths in 1811 and continued until 1983 and as such displays crafts and tools of the trade. The Cottage Garden houses plants grown in the Victorian era and has a rare bee shelter and a reconstructed granary. The Museum is currently closed until late 2008 but is usually open April to December. Nearby is the Henry Moore Foundation displaying the sculptors’ work. There are many pubs in this small place, The Bull & The Old Crown being centrally located and many establishments also serve food. There are 3 B&Bs here – High Hedges, Hall Cottage and Wellrose Barn. Hotel accommodation is at the Golf Club (to the north of the village, 18-hole) and self-catering is also on offer at Wellrose Barn.
