Hitchin is a North Hertfordshire market town, dating back over 1000 years, flourishing due to the wool trade in the 18th century. The industrial revolution saw change and the arrival of the Great Northern Railway brought a new way of life with more opportunities for local farmers. The Corn Exchange in the square was built in response to increased grain trading but now the barley there is solely in the drinks served! This town of 30,000, with its traditional cobbled streets, has quite a few claims to fame. Arvind Parmar the tennis player, Valerie Singleton a TV presenter and other famous names were born here. St Marys parish church is the largest in Hertfordshire. In 1697 there was the most severe hailstorm in British history with hailstones of 4 inches diameter. In 1960 the local council was the first to introduce black bags for refuse collection and it is home to the summer concert festival, Rhythms of the World.. Hitchin is successful at local, regional and national level with its swimming club, aptly based on Fishponds Road! The town has developed around the River Hiz, today providing a beautiful walk from the source 1 mile away. There are many places to stay, pubs, restaurants, 2 nightclubs and the market trades on Tuesday, Friday and Saturday, being the largest permanently erected outdoor market in the Southeast.
