Between Luton and St Albans is Harpenden - a charming and traditional town. It has a village feel but all the conveniences of the town of nearly 30,000 that it is! Property costs here are high due to it’s strong transport links with the M1 and Luton Airport close by, being on average 25% higher than London 30 miles away. Historically a farming and agricultural community, Harpenden grew with the arrival of the high-speed rail link to London. There are many listed buildings and the whole town centre is a conservation area, with the famous Rothamsted Experimental Station where agricultural research takes place. The Common stretches for a mile and hosts cricket matches, carnivals, concerts etc. Also to the south is a large open area called Nomansland, which saw a battle in the War of the Roses, horse racing between 1848 and 1914 and was also the haunt of a 17th century highwaywoman known as the “Wicked Lady” – there’s a pub restaurant in her memory! Harpenden is even mentioned as a constituency in the Election Night Special sketch of Monty Python. It is also the birthplace and/or home of many famous people, such as Tim Rice the composer, Saracens rugby player Andy Farrell and Eric Morecombe the comedian, whom the village hall is named after. An abundance of events take place here, from a teddy bears picnic to a farmers market the 4th Sunday of each month. There are 3 golf clubs, providing courses to suit all abilities, numerous bars and restaurants prevail, perhaps the most famous of which being The White Horse, gastro pub of celebrity chef Jean-Christophe Novelli!
