BOOK HARPENDEN HOTELS

Michael Oakeshott
- Favourite Briton.

Born in Harpenden, Hertfordshire
Born on 11th of December 1901
Died on 19th of December 1990

Oakeshott was a philosopher and political theorist who taught for many years at Cambridge and Oxford, and then spent nearly two decades as Professor of Political Science at the LSE. He disliked political dogma and systematisation, before WWII reacting against both Fascism and Marxism. His 1956 essay On Being Conservative influenced senior Tories who could read, though he was not a member of that political party; his 1962 Rationalism in Politics and Other Essays proved equally attractive to those unhappy at what, at that time, seemed like this country’s unstoppable drift towards socialism.
