There's a special welcome for visitors in Deal, whose town motto translates as "Befriend The Stranger". A delightful seaside centre which has resisted commercialisation, it charms the eye in every direction, from the pebble beach, pier, fishing boats and promenade to the castle, the narrow streets and alleyways, and the crowded buildings of differing styles and ages, many dating back to the 1800s. Deal has bags of history, most romantically that of the smugglers whose underground tunnels sometimes surfaced at local churches. But the story goes way back: it's believed that Julius Caesar landed here in 55 BC. Once an important port and dockyard, Deal is at the heart of White Cliffs Country, along with Dover and Sandwich. Within this broad grouping along Britain's favourite stretch of coastline, Deal is closely linked to neighbours Sandown and Walmer where Henry VIII built three forts in the 1540s. Deal Castle, with its round tiers and distinctive battlements, is the most unchanged. Only a walk away, along the seafront path, is the equally impressive Walmer Castle. Little remains of the Sandown fortress. Other attractions in Deal include the Timeball Tower, built in 1796 as a shutter telegraph, and a maritime and history museum
