Studied medicine at St Bartholomew’s Hospital, practised until 1881. First collection Poems appeared in 1873. Produced number of plays, only one performed in his lifetime. Wrote studies of Milton and Keats. Appointed Poet Laureate in 1913. After WWI published October and Other Poems (1920) and The Testament of Beauty (1929).
