Dartford is a thoroughly modern destination, quite unlike a typical Kentish town. The former Roman settlement, industrial centre and Victorian market place was extensively rebuilt in the 1900s and today, with a population of more than 80,000, is working towards a new wave of regeneration. Some 20 miles east of London, it feels more like an outpost of the capital than a part of the Garden of England although it lies just within the Kent county border, on the north west. Dartford is situated on the Thames, and its famous tunnel leads M25 motorists below the river, while the spectacular Queen Elizabeth II road bridge rises to giddy heights. With quick links to London's bright lights and delightful journeys into the magical heartlands of the Weald, Dartford is an ideal base for visitors. In its own right, however, it has much to recommend it. Some fine old structures have survived modernisation. The Manor Gate House, all that remains of Henry VIII's 16th Century mansion, is still standing, along with medieval buildings in the High Street and the Holy Trinity Church, which dates back to the 1000s and contains a 15th Century mural. Here, the body of Henry V lay overnight for a requiem mass before burial at Westminster Abbey. Then there's the Swanscombe Skull Site where three matching fragments of skull turned out to be among the oldest human remains ever found in Europe. Scenic locations include the 26-acre Central Park, providing glorious floral displays and walks along the Darent riverside, and the smaller Hesketh Park, with sporting facilities and the wooded Dell. Dartford also has a museum, a swimming pool and leisure centre which welcomes non-members, and a thriving nightlife offering concerts, plays, opera, ballet, musicals and panto. Shopping heaven is within easy reach at the huge Bluewater complex.
