The important Wiltshire market town of Warminster dates from Saxon times but the surrounding downs were occupied during the Iron Age, as evidenced by the remaining earthworks. These include the nearby Battlesbury Camp which is one of around 50 Iron Age hill forts in Wiltshire and considered the best preserved and most significant in the county. In the Middle Ages the town became rich on the wool and cloth trade but also owed much of its prosperity to the busy corn market, which was once second only to Bristol in the South West. Many of the older buildings in the Market Place owe their origin to the corn market. The town has thankfully been bypassed and no longer has the busy A36 routed straight through its historic centre. Warminster has an attractive park with a boating lake and the nearby Shearwater Lake has long been a favourite beauty spot. The wonderful National Trust property at Stourhead is also close by. The 18th Century landscaped gardens feature temples and rare plantings around a serene lake and one of the finest follies to be found in England. The house itself is a stylish mansion filled with Georgian treasures, fine paintings and Chippendale furniture.
