The village of Upton Lovell lies in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in the Wyle Valley near the A36. The village overlooks water meadows and has the Salisbury Plains as a backdrop. The area enjoyed prosperity from wool and the village pub, the Prince Leopold, was once a general store serving the needs of the industry. The pub is named after the fourth son of Queen Victoria. Her youngest the Prince Leopold, Duke of Albany frequented the inn when he lived nearby in the village of Boyton. You probably won't find royalty in the pub nowadays but you can get a drink, a meal and accommodation in a delightful riverside location. Further back in history two people were buried in an ancient barrow near the village, one was thought to be wearing a cloak with 36 bone points sewn into it. Other ritualistic articles found in the round barrow from 1500BC have led to theories that the man was a shaman and the other body is that of his wife. The Parish Church of St Augustine has had its bells restored after a successful local fund raising campaign. The church also possesses some wonderful stained glass windows.
