Highworth is a pleasant Market town set high on a hill in the County of Wiltshire, home to just under eight thousand people. There's an interesting mix of architecture from stone built cottages, an abundance of Georgian splendour and elegant houses, and the 13th Century pinnacled church of St Michael's and All Angels, which was used during the Civil War when Cavaliers held a Royalist stronghold within the town. It's surrounded by beautiful countryside with far reaching views of the Thames Valley and the Wiltshire Downs tempting walkers and cyclist with its network of footpaths, and yet is only seven miles or so from the bustling town of Swindon. Highworth dates back to Neolithic times and the Bronze Age, its history is an interesting one where agriculture has played its part across the ages, together with a brewery, and even the production of oriental fibre mats, although the town was also renowned during the 17th Century for its fine Cattle Market. King John granted a Market Charter as far back as 1206, and today's visitors can still enjoy the colourful weekly market held in the picturesque Square, fabulous shops can be found in the High Street and Sheep Street, and a good choice of welcoming pubs and restaurants nearby.
