The village of Froxfield lies close the the River Dun and is set on either side of the old Great West Road, now the A4. This ancient hamlet is most notable for the magnificent red brick almshouses arranged in a quadrangle around an open courtyard, known as the Somerset Hospital. They were founded by the widow of the fourth Duke of Somerset in 1686 for thirty widows of clergy and twenty widows of laymen, according to records of the time. The village flourished when the Kennet and Avon Canal was cut through the valley in 1810. Just a few decades later the Great Western railway made it three main transport arteries passing through the valley just south of the village. The canal was used to carry materials to the wharf at Froxfield that were to be used in the construction of the railway line which eventually led to the demise of the waterways. After years of decline the canal was restored in the 1970s. Visitors arriving by boat can take the two minute walk north from the wharf to the Pelican Inn. Thatched and timber framed buildings still stand in Froxfield, most of which was designated a conservation are in 1993.
