After some years of decline the North Wiltshire market town of Calne is enjoying a resurgence. Situated on the banks of the River Marden with the Marlborough Downs as a backdrop, Calne is surrounded by Areas of Outstanding natural Beauty. The Church of St Mary's is a magnificent testament to Calne's prosperity in medieval times. Some of the fine clothiers houses and factories remain around The Green as evidence of a once thriving wool trade. The A4 runs through Calne and the nearby M4 has helped drive recent expansion. Significant effort has been made to re-establish the town, with new shopping areas and an award winning library helping to restore civic pride. The once derelict Wilts and Berks canal has also enjoyed some restoration. The original wharf remains and parts of the canal have been re-opened. Cyclists will enjoy the North Wiltshire Rivers Route. This twenty mile length of Route 4 of the National Cycle Network serves walkers and cyclists and will in due course link Calne with surrounding the towns of Chippenham, Melksham, Lacock, and Avebury. Those preferring a little more two wheeled excitement should visit Calne's BMX track, which is one of the best in Britain.
