Many people think that Skelmersdale in the county of Lancashire in the North West of England is a relatively New Town. In fact Skelmersdale is mentioned in the Domesday Book as 100 aces of farmland and for most of its history it was a farming community. We then fast forward through to just after the Second World War and Liverpool decided that it was overcrowded and suffering with poor housing and it was decided to create a new town - Skelmersdale was selected as one of these. New housing was erected as were shops, schools and libraries in order to provide the best of everything new for the incoming population. New roads were designed to keep traffic moving with roundabouts reducing the need for traffic lights and therefore easing traffic flow, footpaths and subways were built away from roads for pedestrian safety and a new industrial estate at Pimbo was built with its own motorway linking it with the M6. There is no doubt that Skelmersdale has had its socio economic problems however a determined effort by the Council is starting to effect positive changes in the area. The old council housing is being demolished and new modern practical developments are taking their place and the area is undergoing a seachange of regeneration that will make this an attractive location with excellent facilities.
