Saddleworth is a cluster of fascinating villages positioned in the rugged, wild beauty of the Lancashire moors, close to the borders of Yorkshire. There are several villages and hamlets from Delph, Greenfield which nestles in the Chew River Valley and nudges the Peak District, Diggle which has tunnels through the Pennines into Yorkshire, Lydgate with hill top views over the attractive Tame Valley, Dobcross with its historical Village Square, and Uppermill, the largest village which is overlooked by the impressive engineering feat of the Saddleworth Viaduct, with the Huddersfield Canal journeying underneath through the picturesque village. The area has a rich agricultural heritage with many of the farms which date back centuries still remaining, before the arrival of the Industrial Revolution the farmers added to their earnings with wool weaving, however, with mechanisation the boom of the Industrial Revolution arrived, and with it came the building of Cotton Mills where spinning, and weaving of cotton took place, and dominated the area, this also led to stone weavers cottages, and houses being built which still line the roads today. The moorland landscape is punctuated with the charming villages set within stunning scenery which draws walkers, and artists, to the bewitching area where the legacies of coal mining, mills, and pack horse bridges on the ancient trade routes remain.
