Leigh is located in Lancashire in the North West of England. Leigh did not benefit from green luscious meadows or great forests, in fact the quality of the soil was so poor that no crops were grown in the area. Leigh’s fortunes though lay elsewhere and it was early in the 19th century with the coming of the Industrial Revolution that saw Leigh grow into a vital commercial centre. In the space of just ten years, between 1851 and 1862 the population doubled in size as industrial manufacture and production took hold, transport links improved with the arrival of the canal network and railways and with it Leigh continued its growth. With the demise of the cotton factories, coal mining and foundries in the late 20th century Leigh needed to revitalise itself. Today Leigh offers visitors and residents alike a varied and interesting mix of leisure pursuits and retail therapy. It boasts woodlands where there were none originally, reclamation of an old coal pit at Colliers Wood has resulted in a 130 hectare woodland being created with open spaces and offering some superb views. Leigh is committed to building a sports village which will include a 10,000 seat stadium, athletics track, indoor swimming pool and gymnasiums, with hotel and specialist retail facilities. Together with the Bickershawe Project Leigh is once again proving that as a town it can adapt to change in a positive manner.
