Colne is to be found nestling in one of the valleys of the Pennine hills north of Manchester in the County of Lancashire. It can trace its history back to the Stone Age, and whilst there is no direct evidence that the Romans settled here Roman artefacts have been found in the area. The area around the church, which dates back to around 1100AD, is where town commenced its growth, by the mid 16th century the local population had grown to around 1500 relying on local resources and water power weaving, sheep farming, tanners and brewers were all establishing themselves in the area and it was this wealth of local resources that saw massive growth here in the 18th century. With the dawning of the Industrial Revolution mills started to spring up, with the coming of the railways and canals Colne became an important centre for textile production using the transport network to export its products throughout the country and the world. Today the layout of the town is very much as it once was – straddling the main road that runs through the valley, where once there were mills and manufacturing to attract the industrialist today its visitors are more likely to be tourist coming to appreciate the spectacular and dramatic scenery that only this part of the Pennines can offer.
