Middleton is a small village situated about five miles east of Market Harborough in Leicestershire. Middleton itself, however, is situated in Northamptonshire. It is often mistakenly quoted as a Leicestershire village as it has a Leicestershire post code and is very close to the border between the two counties. It is set in beautiful rural surroundings and is not far from the Grand Union Canal, a historic canal that was of major importance for transportation in the 19th century. Today the canal offers many points of interest for the tourist, including the famous Foxton Locks, which consists of ten sections, making it the largest set of 'staircase' locks in the country. The nearby town of Market Harborough is worth a visit. Market Harborough features a recently developed shopping centre and 'The Old Grammar School', which is situated in the centre of town and was built on wooden stilts. In Middleton itself you can visit the Red Lion, a public house which also offers bed and breakfast. It has three rooms which are ideal for families with TV and DVD players, together with tea and coffee making facilities in each room. If you fancy some exercise you can walk up the village's very steep hill, imaginatively called 'The Hill'.
