Situated in the East Lindsey district of Lincolnshire, Tattershall is on the A513 road from Sleaford to Horncastle. It lies just to the east of where the road crosses the River Witham. Tattershall is probably best known for Tattershall Castle, built in 1434 by Ralph, Lord Cromwell, Treasurer to Henry VI. Tattershall Castle was built on the site of a 13th century stone castle, some of the remains of which can still be seen today. The castle keep is a distinctive red brick structure but it fell into neglect after the death of Ralph Cromwell. It was not restored until 1911 when Lord Curzon of Kedleston refurbished it and then left it to the National Trust. Adjacent to the castle, Lord Cromwell built the fine perpendicular style Holy Trinity Church. Here you can see many fine stained glass windows and a collection of brasses. In this church is a plaque marking the grave of Tom Thumb, another famous Tattershall resident. Tom Thumb was only 47cm tall when he died in 1620, at the age of 101. The market place at Tattershall has a remarkably well kept buttercross from the 15th century. Next to the market place are the remains of Tattershall College, built by Lord Cromwell to educate church choristers.
