The small town of Epworth, Lincolnshire lies on the A161, about halfway between Gainsborough and Goole. Epworth is situated in the Isle of Axholme in the North of Lincolnshire. The Isle of Axholme was actually an inland island, surrounded by rivers, until it was drained in the early 17th century by Dutch engineer Sir Cornelius Vermuyden. The draining represented a major feat of engineering at the time. Epworth is perhaps most famous for being the birthplace of Methodism. The Wesley brothers John and Charles, who founded Methodism, were born in Epworth where their father was Rector from 1695 to 1735. Through missionary work, Methodism was spread vigourously throughout the British Empire. Many Methodist institutions and buildings carry the name of Wesley or Epworth. Epworth is also home the Epworth Show, an agricultural and equestrian show that has run for many years. The show features many animals in procession, as well as classic cars, motor cycles and agricultural vehicles. There is a Real Ale tent for the thirsty! The town also boasts several buildings of note including The Old Rectory, a fine Queen Anne style building that was restored in 1709 following a fire. The parish church of St Andrew was built originally in the 12th century, with some additions made during the 14th and 15th centuries.
