Aswarby lies close to the A15, the road to Sleaford. It is set in a rural part of Lincolnshire, north of Osbournby. The A15 road curves around the delightful park of Aswarby, which possesses some fine mature oak trees. M.R. James, considered by many academics to be one of the finest writers of short supernatural fiction, based one of his famous stories on Aswarby Hall. Many of his readers were unaware that the Hall actually existed. The Tudor mansion was extended in 1836 but unfortunately pulled down in 1951. Only the entrance gates still remain. The name Aswarby is likely to be of Danish origin, like many places in Lincolnshire. The suffix 'by' means settlement or place in Old Danish. It is likely that the name is derived from the Old Danish name of Aswarth. It is recorded as 'Asuuardebi' in the Domesday Book. Travellers on the A15 road can stop by the Tally Ho Inn at Aswarby. The Tally Ho Inn features blazing open fires and old wooden furniture. It has been described as 'a real come-in-from-the-cold sort of place'. The inn also features six rooms in a converted barn just a few steps away.
