Walthamstow derives from an ancient word meaning "the place of welcome", and this north-east London suburb will soon be greeting visitors in style, with an ongoing programme of improvements sprucing up the town centre and surrounding areas. The Walthamstow Village conservation area, contrasting with streets of terraced housing, is the most desirable residential spot. With its charming homes, quiet roads, independent shops, and restaurants and pubs, it was recently voted London's best urban village by Time Out magazine. The oldest buildings are St Mary's Church, dating back to the 1100s, and a 15th Century hall house. Local history is preserved at Vestry House Museum, a former workhouse and police station now exhibiting household items and clothing from a vanished lifestyle. It also recreates a Victorian parlour and a police cell with original features. Another museum, the William Morris Gallery, displays a collection of fabrics, rugs and furnishings in designer Morris's one-time Georgian home whose gardens, Lloyd Park, are open to the public. The Pump House Steam & Transport Museum looks at a different memory of Walthamstow. Shoppers will enjoy the historic street market and the more contemporary Selborne Centre, while anyone fancying a flutter could visit the local greyhound-racing stadium.
