The great appeal of Vauxhall is its location. Standing on the south side of the Thames in central London, it's very convenient to world-class attractions such as the Houses of Parliament, the London Eye and the South Bank. Recent years have seen major redevelopment at the riverside, with new, contemporary buildings rising up, and Vauxhall has now started to attract discerning homebuyers. James Bond fans will recognise the MI6 headquarters at Vauxhall Cross, which has featured in several 007 movies. Vauxhall is also home to a lively gay scene, second only to Soho's, and to a large number of Portuguese residents, whose restaurants add variety to local dining opportunities. The neighbourhood has an interesting claim to fame, with the former Pleasure Gardens - a popular entertainment ground near Vauxhall Bridge - becoming the site of the world's first circus, in 1772. What's left of the ground has been renamed Spring Gardens. These days, residents prefer to take their fresh air at the Green Flag-holding Vauxhall Park. Here, there are tennis courts, a bowling green, a model village and examples of the remarkable gingko tree, a species which predates the dinosaurs. Another fun family destination is the Vauxhall City Farm.
