The north-London district of Tottenham is a place of contrasts. The High Road has in recent years enjoyed many improvements, with spaces created for new businesses and some imposing Edwardian buildings restored to their former glory. Yet not too far away from these busy cosmopolitan streets, to the east, lie Tottenham Marshes, offering more than 100 acres of open space crossed by the River Lee. Tottenham also boasts a great historic attraction in the shape of Bruce Castle, a Grade I-listed manor house that was built in the 16th Century and modified during the ensuing generations. The Castle now operates as a museum of local history, also opening its 20 acres of parkland to the public. Here, there are tree trails, a paddling pool and facilities for tennis, basketball and bowls, with festivals and special events taking place over the summer. Football fans will already know Tottenham as the location of White Hart Lane, home ground of Tottenham Hotspur. Keep-fit fans, meanwhile, can keep in trim at the Tottenham Green Leisure Centre. Culturally, the neighbourhood benefits from the newly created Bernie Grant Arts Centre, while historians will appreciate All Hallows Church, the oldest local building, dating back to Norman times.
