Tooting's reputation is literally out of this world! The busy south-London suburb has recently had a crater on Mars called after it: Tooting Crater was named by a planetary scientist working in Hawaii, in honour of his English hometown. Tooting was previously famous as the location of the BBC's 1970s sitcom "Citizen Smith", whose central character, a hopeless revolutionary, demanded "Freedom for Tooting". At the heart of Tooting is the vast green expanse of Tooting Common, created from two existing stretches of land - Tooting Bec Common, which boasts an open-air freshwater lido, and Tooting Graveney Common, hosting an athletics stadium. Visitors enjoy the changing spread of scenery, which varies from woodland and grassland to formal landscapes, and includes ponds, a wildlife reserve and sporting facilities. Although some gentrification has taken place, Tooting retains its down-to-earth cosmopolitan personality, with residents flocking to the two indoor markets and a wide range of small shops as well as the usual high-street stores. For many locals, going to the dogs is a fun experience, with the Wimbledon Greyhound Stadium close at hand. Tooting is also known for traditional pubs, an excellent variety of restaurants, with Indian cuisine particularly recommended, and several amusement arcades.
