The south-west London neighbourhood of Roehampton is renowned for sport, education and a historic village which is protected as a conservation area. The village, with its period buildings and grand detached houses bordering Putney Heath, is a very affluent place even though it's bisected by a dual carriageway. This was historically a wealthy district, and some of the imposing mansions built in the 1700s are now occupied by colleges of Roehampton University, founded in 2004. The creation of the university - joining existing colleges and teacher-training centres - and the new Queen Mary Hospital in 2006 have symbolised an upswing for Roehampton which in many parts, from the village itself to the vast, modernist Alton Estate adjoining Richmond Park, had been in need of some regeneration. Sporting organisations followed the lead. In 2007, the National Tennis Centre set up home here with extensive facilities for players, and the Lawn Tennis Association quickly moved into the complex. The Roehampton Sport and Fitness Centre, meanwhile, caters for young and old with activities ranging from indoor bowls to trampolining and basketball, while golfers enjoy a choice of nearby courses. Roehampton is also convenient to the great attractions of Barnes, Putney, Wimbledon and Richmond
