Plumstead is a green and friendly south-east London suburb with close connections to Woolwich. In the second half of the 1800s, Plumstead grew rapidly as homes were built to accommodate workers at the Royal Arsenal, the country's leading manufacturer of military equipment, weapons and ammunition. Today, the Arsenal marks the boundary between Woolwich and Plumstead, and although it ceased production in 1967, its 76 acres are now being thoroughly regenerated with new housing, shops and landscaping. The historic, listed buildings have been painstakingly restored and Firepower - The Royal Artillery Museum is also housed within the complex. Plumstead benefits considerably from its proximity to the impressive sights of Woolwich and Greenwich, a little further west, while offering a quieter base for visitors. At the heart of the neighbourhood are Plumstead Common and Winn's Common, two large stretches of heathland and grassland with a variety of sporting facilities. Especially pleasant spots in and around the Commons include Slade Ponds, a tranquil wildfowl habitat, and a nature reserve. Further east, Bostall Hill Park affords lovely views from its summit. Adjoining it are Lesnes Abbey Woods, a beautiful expanse of woodland complete with pathways and a secure area protecting rare plants and animals.
