Oxford Street, stretching one-and-a-half miles from Marble Arch to Tottenham Court Road tube station, is Europe's biggest and busiest shopping street, catering for every purse. Its most famous destination is Selfridges, which has stood on the same site for more than 100 years. Other leading department stores include Debenhams, John Lewis and House of Fraser, whose huge exteriors form a dramatic contrast with the smaller retailers, particularly the cheap souvenir shops and "closing down sales" found towards Tottenham Court Road. All of the shopper's favourite high-street chains have flagship stores on Oxford Street, from Marks & Spencer, Topshop and H&M to HMV, Virgin Megastore and Borders, while sportswear giants such as Adidas and Nike are also present and correct. Meanwhile, the legendary 100 Club still opens for live music every night. There are some great little hideaways tucked behind Oxford Street's tall facade: Carnaby Street, the centre of London's Swinging Sixties scene, is filled with boutiques selling vintage, designer and street fashions, while the shops in St Christopher's Place, a continental-style precinct, are chic and fascinating. Leading off Oxford Circus, Regent Street boasts some world-renowned stores: Hamley's toyshop, Apple's flagship store, and Liberty, celebrated for stylish fabrics and designs.
