New Cross is part of the South London Borough of Lewisham, to its northern end, with Peckham to the west and Deptford north. As an element of the capital it is relatively new, apparently growing as a settlement around a staging post for coaches possibly as late as the 17th century, and only becoming part of the London Council in 1889. The Goldsmith’s Company were of significance in the development of the area, purchasing the then agricultural spot in the 17th century and investing in it over the following two centuries, including purchasing the vacated buildings of a naval school and using them for its technical institute in 1891. From that institution Goldsmiths’ College of the University of London has grown. Goldsmiths has been significant in the cultural life of the area, its students forming a ready audience for new music and particularly in the 1980s for new comedy. The college has many alumni of significance in modern British cultural, including Malcolm McLaren, Antony Gormley, Alex James and Damien Hirst. The energy and edge that feeds into creativity can have its downside, however, and the area can merit the epithet challenging at times. A still unsolved incident that occurred in 1981, the New Cross Fire that killed 13 black youngsters, was alleged to have been caused by arsonists, though now thought accidental, the police investigation then has been much criticized. Four years earlier the area witnessed The Battle of Lewisham between the National Front and anti-fascists.
