Mitcham in the south-west of London is a sizeable settlement, the capital’s growth over the years meaning this once rural spot is now surrounded by other suburbs including Tooting, Streatham, Croydon and Sutton. The place-name Mitcham is said to mean large village, which gives a clue about its antiquity: Roman graves have been discovered in the area, a hill-fort is thought to have been constructed here, and in Saxon times its most notable moment in history came with the Battle of Merton believed to have been fought within its boundaries. A living link with Saxon times is the tower of the parish church, which dates from that era. Mitcham common, almost 500 acres of publicly accessible land rich in trees and with an abundance of wildlife ponds, is another reminder of the rural past. Lavender and peppermint for perfumes and flavourings were once major crops grown in Mitcham, and eventually distilled there, their fragrance and beauty attracting the well-to-do of London to visit or stay – Queen Elizabeth I and John Donne among them. The evolution of the town included industrial development along the River Wardle, and the first public railway in the world, the Surrey Iron Railway, though that closed in the mid-19th century. One modern constant is the cricket green, claimed to be the oldest in continual use. While much of the town is modern, there are some fine older buildings to be seen including the Queen Anne Eagle House, and Regency Elm Lodge. Railways continue to be important to Mitcham, which has excellent transport provision to the city centre – enhanced with the opening in 2008 of Mitcham Eastfields Railway Station – and to areas like St Albans, Wimbledon and Epsom. There is also a Tramlink stop offering access to Croydon and Wimbledon.
