Isleworth is a Thames-side settlement in west London, with the charming buildings of "Old Isleworth" grouped around a picturesque waterfront. Many of the houses, of differing styles, survive from the 18th and 19th Centuries, and they look out over the river alongside All Saints parish church, which dates back to the 13th Century. The church has been rebuilt twice, and its 1970s flat-roof buildings contrast starkly with the splendour of its old tower. Charles Dickens, like so many before and since, liked to sit at pubs such as the London Apprentice and enjoy the view across to Isleworth Ait, a small, richly wooded island in the river. The Ait is a wildlife sanctuary filled with poplar and willow trees, wild flowers, plants, birds and rare insects. Another river landmark is the old boating pavilion, built in the 1770s, which is resplendent with pink walls, a green roof and white pillars. Isleworth also offers many green spaces, from small neighbourhood parks to the open parkland of the Wyke Green golf course. Silverhall Park and Thornbury Playing Fields both have nature conservation areas, while Redlees Park includes sporting facilities and a 19th Century house converted into an arts and crafts centre with studios.
