Holloway is a busy urban area of north London, currently in the process of regeneration. Once its best-known building was the women's prison, Britain's largest, where former inmates have included Ruth Ellis and Emmeline, Sylvia and Christabel Pankhurst. Now Holloway is more famous for its £390 million Emirates Stadium, the home of Arsenal FC and the third-biggest stadium in London, after Wembley and Twickenham. Opened in 2006, the stadium includes a museum detailing the history of the football club. Holloway ranges round the Holloway Road, running northwards from Highbury Corner to Archway. The area is multicultural, with a large student population attending the City And Islington College centres, and there are plenty of cheap and cheerful restaurants offering a variety of cuisines, from Italian and Indian to Mediterranean, Russian, Spanish and Caribbean. There's a predominance of Victorian terraced housing. Holloway Road is characterised by pubs and small shops, with the Nag's Head shopping centre offering major high-street stores. However, a number of luxury buildings are now being constructed near the Stadium, and home-buyers are increasingly interested in Holloway's two conservation areas. Nightlife ranges from cinema to drama and comedy at the Pleasance fringe theatre near Caledonian Road tube station.
