Highbury, a busy north-London district, provides the ideal base for visitors seeking an exciting break in the capital. The hugely fashionable Islington, neighbouring to the south, is filled with contemporary restaurants, cafés, bars, boutiques, an antiques quarter and a vibrant nightlife promising excellent local and national theatre. It also offers the traditional London experience of Chapel Market. Not much further away lie the glittering lights of the West End. In its own right, Highbury is primed for redevelopment but still has much to enjoy, notably its green spaces. The 29-acre Highbury Fields, a beautiful common overlooked by stately Victorian and Georgian townhouses and topped by the historic Christ Church, is much-loved by casual walkers, runners and sports fans using the tennis courts and newly refurbished swimming pool. The park also includes the Field Of Hope playground, originally set up for the benefit of sick children, and a dramatic statue commemorating those who died in the Boer War. The former home of 19th Century statesman Joseph Chamberlain stands on the edge of Highbury Fields. Elsewhere, the Highbury Clock Tower is a wonderful late-Victorian relic, while Arsenal FC's new Emirates Stadium and museum is situated right on the western border with Holloway.
