The north London suburb of Finchley is so big it's divided into four separate districts: East, West and North Finchley and Finchley Central. For years the constituency of former PM Margaret Thatcher, Finchley is a residential area characterised by imposing red-brick Victorian and Edwardian houses and terraces. Finchley Manor - now the Sternberg Centre, Europe's largest Jewish cultural base and the home of an educational museum - dates back to 1723. Finchley is well served by tubes and buses, and is close to the M1. It has good local amenities and much to offer visitors. The Phoenix is considered one of the best independent cinemas in the UK. Certainly it's one of the oldest, with a historic art-deco auditorium. The local council encourages amateur arts, drama, music and film-making, and the area's first professional arts centre, artsdepot, recently opened in North Finchley. More mainstream entertainments including movies, tenpin bowling and swimming are available at the Great North Leisure Park, and Finchley Lido, with its pools and fitness centre, is popular too. Outdoor types may enjoy Finchley Golf Club or the tennis, bowls and other sporting opportunities in Victoria Park, while Cherry Tree Wood Park hosts regular outdoor events for the whole community.
