East Ham is a busy, bustling district of east London, sometimes known as the gateway to Essex. It never strictly belonged to the old East End, although it edges it, and it still upholds some traditional Cockney customs. The long-established and esteemed Robins restaurant serves up as good a plate of pie and mash, or jellied eels, as you'll find anywhere. However, there's a wide variety of restaurants and cuisines, specialist shops and places of worship, all reflecting the cultural diversity of today's East Ham. Like its neighbours in Newham borough, the neighbourhood has been undergoing improvements as preparations continue for the 2012 London Olympics, and residents look forward to the many sporting facilities that will become available. East Ham already benefits from a first-class leisure centre boasting swimming pools, health and fitness activities and a climbing wall, and new football amenities have been provided at Flanders Field, where former England captain Bobby Moore used to play. Despite its urban character, East Ham offers tree-lined residential roads filled with attractive Victorian and Edwardian terraces. It's home to a large nature reserve, in the grounds of St Mary Magdaline Church, and to the beautiful Central Park - the most popular park in Newham.
