Not so very long ago, it was a wasteland. Today Docklands is London's newest and most vibrant community, a place where thousands live, shop, work and play. Docklands covers eight square miles of the East End, surrounding the Thames where it passes Bermondsey Riverside, Wapping, Surrey Docks, Limehouse, the Isle Of Dogs, the Royal Docks and Beckton. These are places whose docks - formerly part of the Port of London - had closed by 1980, leaving the land derelict. The regeneration plan launched in 1981 wasn't without teething problems. In the Eighties, an influx of young professionals (Yuppies) to the newly built apartments led many to associate Docklands wholly with rich City kids. The property slump of the 1990s caused delays in construction and selling. Now, however, Docklands provides homes to suit all pockets. Modern skyscrapers tower over historic warehouses and charming old pubs, and offices, shops, restaurants and bars look out on pleasant green spaces and gardens. The Canary Wharf business development stands as a monument to the new prosperity, while Docklands' past life as a port is detailed at the Museum In Docklands. The area is easily reached via the Docklands Light Railway and the Jubilee tube line.
