Deptford is located in south-east London, to the west of Greenwich. This is a place whose fortunes have see-sawed dramatically, but today, it's very much on the up. Deptford began as a small fishing settlement, coming to prosperity when Henry VIII founded the Royal Naval Dockyard in 1513. The dockyard closed 350 years later, becoming a cattle market. Deptford was bombed during World War II, and in ensuing years, suffered unemployment and over-crowding. Now steadily regenerating, Deptford is a bright, busy, multicultural district with a growing reputation for art, design and culture, filled with galleries and performance venues. The Albany Theatre is home to many community arts and music groups, and the Laban Dance Centre has two theatres and a training programme. McMillan Student Village houses a young, vibrant community attending the dance centre, Greenwich University and Goldsmiths College, and Convoy's Wharf - the former Dockyard - is being redeveloped for housing and offices. But the past isn't forgotten. The centuries-old Deptford market is still thriving, and many historic shops and buildings remain. Parts of St Nicholas' Church date from the 14th Century, and the 18th Century St Paul's Church has been described as "one of London's finest Baroque buildings".
